How do the assessments of certain events or records differ in different parts of the world and from within different cultural traditions? Where does digital availability foster international cooperation, and where does it lead to new insights? How does global availability change the image of both one’s own and foreign culture? To what extent does what is accessible – and also what is not accessible – shape the image that emerges worldwide about a cultural tradition? What is the impact of global exchange about cultural heritage, where does it build bridges, and where are different ideas and expectations difficult to convey?

The 12th International Conference “Shaping Access!” will take place from October 19 to 21, 2022 in Hamburg – a city that sees itself as a “gateway to the world” and, through international (maritime) trade, is traditionally a place where different cultures meet. The Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg invites you this year to reflect on the mutual dependence of digital availability and global reception.

The conference is funded by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, the Federal Archives, the Deutsche Digitalen Bibliothek, the Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, the German National Library, the Deutsches Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz, the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, the Forschungs- und Kompetenzzentrum Digitalisierung Berlin (DigiS), iRights e.V., the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg, Wikimedia Deutschland and the ZKM Karlsruhe.
